CITIZEN - TIME THEATRE

This exhibition in Baselworld marks the 100th year of the Citizen Watch brand. Since its foundation 100 years ago citizen is recognized as a worldwide leader in technologic innovations. Founded in 1918, as the Shokosha Watch Research Institute, they produced their first Pocket watch in 1924 and presented it to mayor Goto Shinpei. Mayor Goto named the watch "Citizen" with the hope that the watch, then a luxury item, world one day become widely available to ordinary citizens and help to forge a new culture of efficiency and responsibility.

We began with Goto’s intention for the 20th century citizen and asked ourselves what it means to be a citizen in the 21st century. Over the past 100 years citizenship has shifted from the local to global and we are designing with the intent to connect the new citizen to their complete context / the viewer to the actor / the audience to the stage.
